How to start and promote your Own Business!
The laws and regulations are tight on the sale of homemade items and you must comply with them. If you are selling a food item consideration must be given to the type of food and how it is packaged. Appropriate warnings are a legal must and they should be clear and leave no grey area with regards to Allergy Information , Age Guidelines , safety precautions etc. The manufacture of the product must be carried out within a suitable environment to ensure that cross contamination doesn't occur - if something that shouldn't be in the product presents a choking hazard you are liable and it will cost you….a lot! You must find out exactly what the law is in your area and how this affects your particular product if in doubt your local council will be able to advise.
Thought must be given to your outlet source- are you going to sell online or at local farmers markets or a bit of both? you will need to build the cost of Marketing and anyWeb Design and site Maintenance into your costings it is about more than the cost of raw ingredients and if you cannot produce the product for a reasonable price then rethink the business!! Don't hope that people will pay over the odds for your product it is tough enough to get going without pricing yourself out of the market!
Costings should take into account every expense you will incur from the ingredients down to the light bulbs! you must pay for the extra utilities costs(and possibly premises) of production, any safety precautions like gloves, hair nets etc ingredients , Label Printing ( for this find a small business friendly company such as Itstick Labels) the Boxes and Packaging ( again find a small business friendly company such as Millvale) .
Once all of these things have been taken into consideration and you are going ahead Sell your Product! Don't be afraid of being a pest, try to make sure everyone hears about your product…..Social Media is a great tool for free marketing. Research other companies and see what connections they have and don't be afraid of samples! many people fear giving away free samples as they feel it is giving away money but set yourself a limit and build this into your marketing costs, buy disposable "taster" pots rather than giving away full sizes and make a scaled down label to present it well. This can be the most effective way of marketing a product!
All in all there is no easy route to success but if you have a product that you feel passionate about then what are you waiting for? start your research!
