5 Hairdresser Business Strategies for Success
I read a story once about Jack Nicklas, who for all ya'll that don't know is a golfing legend and he talked about the way that he started the season every year. He went to his teaching pro and told him, “show me how to hold the club, address the ball, etc. Know what he's doing? He's going over the very basic elements of his trade and accomplishments, and we need to learn the same lesson.

Learning is an excellent tool to replace some of the distortions of how to run a successful hairdresser business that we come up against from our friends in the industry that haven't ever increased their sales. If we listen to the experts in the station next to us we become callous and indifferent and our cusotmers will catch the vibes and begin to look elsewhere for the services that we provide. But the real success is to keep the learning continual and never allow yourself to believe that you or I have arrived.
So let's just consider some of the many facets of conducting a successful hairdresser business:
1. Your customers are #1: This is as fundamental as it gets and yet we're all conditioned to let it fly and let our folks know specifically what we feel ... like, 'don't they even consider what I'm doing for them? I'm just having an awful day today so they need to stop complaining to me all the time.'
Do we really have bad days? I mean does the sun come up everyday? Yes of course, but we've got to show our recogition of our clientele and value them just like we want them to value us. Actually, would you like to try a little test with your customers? Exceed their expectations with your service and then watch to see how they respond; are you game?
2. There's gold in your list: I'm hoping that you already have one because this should be mandatory that you must have or develop your own list of customers that you can continue to keep in touch with on some kind of a regular basis. Let me ask you this ... do you want your customers to be loyal to you?
Just how incredible would it be if you were confident about your client base that will continue to schedule you and refer others to you? How do you cultivate this and then keep giving them more and more value as a client of yours? By beginning and then keeping a list of all the people that you serve and then correspond with them on a regular schedule.
3. Lifetime customer value: This is an expression that most in business don't utilize or apply in their businesses. And it's unforntunate. You won't ever know how great you can serve your clientele until you know exactly what they are worth to you in your hairdresser business in the long run. Or as it's called ... their lifetime customer value. You will have to learn a simplistic formula to put the numbers together cost per visit, products bought, visits per year, times 5 years.
4. New Faces: First time folks ought to have some benefits from you each time you get one in your chair. Have you ever been to a mechanic for the first time and wondered how you were going to get screwed? I mean treated? Have you ever taken advantage of any prospects the first time they came in to see you? I'm sure that you haven't, but we've all certainly had that awful experience ourselves, haven't we?
5. Being fresh: And I don't mean insulting your customers, but by bringing in something new to your salon or station to change the look of what you started with XXX years ago. Certainly you know what I mean don't you Come on spice it up a bit. Do some cool theme for a little while to bring something fresh to your space and have some fun with your clients. Make them laugh, see if they would like some tea of coffee or a bottled water. How about a donut hole? Don't give them those peppermints that are so old the cellophane is stuck to them. Give us a break!
Obviously some things to think about and then ... make it happen. Come on, give yourself to your clientele and see if they don't approve of your hospitality.
How awesome would it be to become one of the prominent hairdresser businesses in your town? You can and you should because you are the worth your best effort. We have a lot more to talk about, come and spend some time with us.
