And if this mode of settlement fails then franchisor ad franchisee can take a legal help

What are the Types of Franchise Disputes and How to Deal with Them?

What are the Types of Franchise Disputes and How to Deal with Them?

No relationship can be existed without its conflicts and it goes double in case of business relations. If we talk about franchisee-franchisor relationship, it is not always mounting. On the one time, franchisor feels that he has full authority and rights to enforce systems and standards whereas, the franchisee on the contrary wants to work as an independent entity and like every business, disputes occur here too.

Let us read what are the general claims of both the parties and how should they deal with these disputes:

Franchisor Claims

  • Franchisors might sue a current or terminated franchisee to collect the money owed.

  • Franchisors may sue franchisee who do not abide by system standards

  • When the franchise starts selling other things in his outlet or establishes an independent firm)

Franchisee Claims

  • Lack of support from franchisors

  • Franchise Failure

  • When the franchisor provided wrong information just to encourage the franchisee to sign the franchise agreement at the initial stage of buying a franchise.

How to resolve a Franchise Dispute cost effectively and quickly as possible?

First, before entering into a Franchise Agreement ensure you understand your rights and obligations, the other parties rights and obligations.

Second, ensure the Franchise Agreement has a dispute resolution clause. Such a clause may appear something like this:

1st Step Mutual Negotiation

The best way to settle the disputes is looking for a mutualsolution than taking any legal action.

2nd Step Meditation

The solution cannot be found, then both the involved parties i.e. the franchisors and franchisees need to resolve the dispute by way of mediation. And if this mode of settlement fails then franchisor ad franchisee can take a legal help.

3rd Step Arbitration

If still the parties did not agree at mediation, Arbitration is the next step. In arbitration, the parties opt for a private dispute resolution procedure instead of going to court.

Key features are:

  • Procedure can be tailored so as to suit the complexity and nature of the dispute .

  • Faster and more cost effective than a Court proceeding.

  • The arbitrator makes a decision that will be binding on the parties.

The key point in all relationships is an open and an effective communication. Hopefully the article provides great help and guidance to the franchisees and franchisors in settling down their franchise disputes.

Shrewd marketers know this and then bait and switch you with their marketing message

The SendOutCards Scam Bona Fide Truth

The SendOutCards Scam Bona Fide Truth
Read my other article, The Pros And Cons of SendOutCards for a thorough review.

Truth #1: "Scam" is used by Internet Marketers to catch your eye.

A million people are online today searching for a way to make money.

* Marketers on the Internet understand that those are popular words being typed into a Google search.
* People researching opportunities resort t the web to quickly findout information around these companies, often adding the word scam to the search.
* Which means, there are a lot of people searching online for the phrase SendOutCards Scam.
* Shrewd marketers know this and then, "bait and switch" you with their marketing message.

Unbelievable? Just skip to the end of any of the search results for SendOutCards scam. I'll wager the vast majority actually end up saying great things and offer to be your sponsor.

Truth #2: Only the BBB and the FTC really keep tabs on true scams.

News moves quickly on the Intenet. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) and the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) are watchdogs in the United States, created to keep an eye on businesses on behalf of consumers. Their specific role is to ensure consumers have a voice in the market.
The BBB and the FTC keep a history on complaints filed against any companies. They keep track of the resolution a company chooses to take in response to any accusations. Read it and decide for yourself.

Truth #3: Life isn't always fair.

Used car salesman are often sleazy by association and MLMs are often considered scams for the same reason.

Its very unfortunate but generally, its what people think.

The good news is?Google has begun to really nail people for misguided marketing and both the FTC and the BBB are working diligently alongside of Goog, which will eventually change the industry's reputation. It's called the "Google slap." Google simply won't allow you to be found in its search results if you don't play by the rules. This literally shuts down a marketer online.

So, what is the real truth about SendOutCards scam?

There's no such thing as get-rich-quick.

People who treat their SendOutCards business like a business; understand that it does take money to make money; and put a lot of effort and tenacity into their venture; succeed. There's proof of these people in every single MLM opportunity.

* Commit to one year with your new venture
* Reinvest your first rounds of revenue
* Refuse to give up.

If someone speaks or writes about a SendOutCards scam, find out what they "tried" in building their business. I guarantee you, that's where you'll find the truth.

Property Management for Landlords with Office 365

Property Management for Landlords with Office 365

So, here's a way to stay on top of things, make sure you never miss a deadline or forget an essential and, what's more, do it on low cost.

Oh, sure. You've heard that before haven't you?

Okay then, let's look at what you need to do. Property, like any asset, needs maintenance, and then there's stuff like gas certificates, electrical certificates, PAT tests, insurance, scheduled decorating, insulation checks… Oh the list is endless.

Obviously, you're not going to do all that yourself, you'll need to employ people, and then you'll need to keep tabs on who to use, how much they charge, what you have outstanding with them, what you owe them… OMG.

And there's the tenants. You'll need to list what proof of identity they've provided, their rent payments, their complaints, your complaints against them, what improvement notices you've served them, what progress they've made on improvements, forwarding addresses… Suddenly you're thinking that being a landlord is no great thing.

Now take a couple of deep breaths and prepare to discover a way to keeptabs on all of this without breaking a sweat, and without spending a fortune.

The great thing about this is that all of the stuff going on with a property is printed on paper or documentedby email, so all you'll need to do is stay on top of the documentation, file it all away carefully and retrieve it when you need it.

Okay, good start.

Let's see, if you file every document in a folder for the property it refers to, everything will be in that folder when you need it, right?

That's good if you're dealing with just a single place, but what happens if you have a tenant who moves from one of your properties to another. Now you have a tenant history that spans two folders. Hmmm. What happens if you have an electrician who works on two, three or five of your properties. Now you have contractor records that span several of your folders. Oh hum, things are getting a little tricky.

Let's think again.

Suppose that instead of sorting papers and filling filing cabinets, you buy a scanner for your computer. Let's further suppose that you scan every document, letter, reminder and invoice and store them as PDF documents. No major science needed here, anyone could do this part. Once scanned, you can index the scanned PDFs into an electronic document management system (EDMS) and add some basic metadata.

Okay, this part needs some brain. You need to register the document to a property, and register the document to atenant and in the event that it's an invoice or estimate, register the document to a contractor. So, in the metadata for every document indexed you set key flags for property, tenant and contractor.

Sounds complex? Not really. If you keep records of properties, tenants and contractors as lists, you can select from the list that which applies to each document. Once the document is indexed, the EDMS library can then be filtered and sorted to show you summaries of what work each property has had, what rent each property has earned, who each tenant is and the complete tenant and contractor histories.

Simple?

Now comes the clever part. When you store and index a document that requires a repeat action after a given period of time, like a PAT test certificate, you can automatically set an event to trigger for the next due date. The event will then cause an email to go to yourself or whoever you designate as the responsible person for ensuring the next PAT test is done on time. Scheduled maintenance, like painting and decorating can be set to start a work-flow so that quotations, start of work and completion dates are all met.

Then comes the best part yet. All of this can be stored in the cloud. This means you can get to it wherever you are and on whatever device to chose to view it on. At a tenants address, in your car, in the pub, in the bath, it doesn't matter. You can access the data by PC, laptop, tablet or smart phone and take the required action without wrecking your day.

The tool to use – Microsoft Office 365.

The cost – as little as £4 per month.

So, why aren't you doing it now?

Further free advice can be found at http://www.ffox-software.com.

If you get really stuck on the DIY path, call us and discuss letting us set it up for you. We won't take long to do it and we won't charge you an arm and a leg.

Increasing Importance of Business Centers in Gurgaon

Increasing Importance of Business Centers in Gurgaon

There was a time when Gurgaon used to be a local stretch of village where nobody seemed interested to invest. Now, it is almost impossible to find a desired space in the heart of the city. Apart from this, the initiative taken by Haryana Government to raise the funds for the development of the city has caused many big corporations to invest further. You can find a number of business centers operating in the city. The city has become a great business hub for hundreds of business centers operating worldwide.

Gurgaon is first among others, to provide a complete solution for companies in search for a better location for the purpose of their office needs. Due to all this, there is of course an upward trend that shows a little bit of apprehension  among investors or property dealers as they think that the market would soon slack. If we consider the market trend over a couple of years, it shows a further slump in the property rates. This seems practically impossible as nothing can be said regarding the ups and downs of property rates.

Business centers in Gurgaon are growing day by day. This is primarily because of maintaining excellent business strategies along with a pool of resources to handle all office activities. However, you need to attain certain things in your business in order to remain at the top, otherwise there are chances that you may lose the momentum in your business. So, in order to remain in the business, you need to adopt certain tactics to be in the limelight for good causes. Such centers offer all kinds of facilities to run a business in the heart of the city. The best part of a business center is that they provide all facilities expected by a company, for example, virtual office, instant office, a number of support services and much more.

There are a number of support functions as well that help to maintain, backup and optimize all operations at various levels. These services mainly include administrative support, security data and employees, corporate lounge, IT support, office supplies, etc.

Norwegian Cruise Line Ends Business Relations With Ytb

Norwegian Cruise Line Ends Business Relations With Ytb

YTB is considered to be a "card mill" by many in the travel industry. YTB also faces a lawsuit later this year through the state of California, for accusations of an MLM performing as a pyramid scheme. The origional intent by Attorney General Edmund Brown Jr. was to shut down the company's unlawful operation before more people were hurt by this scam.

Other aligations have also been made against YTB, and will all be addressed during this September trial. The state of California is seeking $10 million in restitution for the California residents who bought into the business, and another $15 million in cival penalties.

Since the lawsuit was first presented, YTB has reported some changes in their business plan and stratagies. But will it be a case of "too little too late"? We will all be watching the outcome of this case. One has to wonder why it had to come to this in the first place?

The best choice would be if an entrepreneur invests his own money in the business

Business From Scratch

Business From Scratch

"The hardest thing about getting started is getting started."

                                                …Guy Kawasaki

To own a business is a great challenge. It's not difficult at all to start a business and succeed in it too provided you follow certain laid down principles of entrepreneurship. These principles are time-tested and provide guidance to avoid possible pitfalls. In this article, our discussion would generally revolve around these principles.

While starting a business of his own, an entrepreneur has to decide which main product he'd like to keep in focus. Also, he'll have to see whether there was any market for that product? Also, he has to see which other competitors already exist. So, he has to do something that distinguishes him from others in the area. He should develop his niche. His product has to be better in quality; he may offer useful options to the customers within the same price range. Say, there're two Pizza shops side by side. One of them being new in the business has a system for home-delivery whereas the other one doesn't offer this facility. Naturally, the one with home-delivery system would have an edge over the other.

Before starting a business, an entrepreneur has to carry out a survey as to which product was required by the market. Then he should choose his product keeping market need in view. He should always be thinking about the new ideas. He should assess his idea's market potential.  He may look for some add-ons in the existing products; or still, he can make use of new technology, think of innovations. Once, he has done his homework, then he should implement his idea. The uniqueness of his idea would catch the customer's attention. He may also see which segment of the society he intends to target.

A lot depends these days upon marketing of a product. Marketing is nothing but ways and means to sell your product. He has to resort to massive advertisement for his product through various means like handouts, internet, banners, newspapers, radio, TV, etc. I would explain it in this way: Say, you've got gold in your pocket and you want to sell it, but unless you tell somebody about your intention, it would be next to impossible to find a customer for your gold. The same is true for your business.

As mentioned above, an entrepreneur can make the best use of internet to promote his business. He may design his website through some professional in the field and attain international exposure. Website must be promoted through various means. It can be be promoted through search engines, business cards, stationery, etc.

Selling online these days has become a roaring business. It's a multi-billion industry and is quite cheap as compared to an actual bricks and mortar store. Now, you can access billions of websites, find an item of your choice and place an order online. Say, an entrepreneur is engaged in supplying electronics goods to his customers. For his satisfaction, the purchaser wants to see the item before placing an order so that he could be sure whether the item being supplied to him was exactly the same that he wanted. So, he'll communicate with the supplier on the internet and at the same time see the item physically on the monitor of his computer before placing an order. Just imagine, how much time, effort and money is saved!

Before starting his business, an entrepreneur has to choose what form of business he intends to follow like sole proprietorships, partnerships or corporations.. In sole proprietorship, he is fully responsible for all debts and liabilities. This form of business is very popular. The examples include home-based businesses, consultants, restaurants, etc. He can do his business in partnership with somebody and share the assets, liabilities and profits of his business. If he intends to conduct his business on a large scale, he can venture into a corporation. Corporations are divided into shares or stocks. Ownership is dependent on the number of shares owned. Corporations are expensive to set up.

There's one thing that's very important while starting a business and that's preparation of a business plan. Anybody, who starts a business, must prepare a business plan in advance. A business plan is a notice board of the company that shows the entrepreneur's vision about the business. It convinces the client that the company's business was in safe hands and that it wouldn't be risky for him to make financial commitments to this company. The business plan comes handy while applying for loan as well. It tells the investor as to how the loan would be repaid. A standard business plan may comprise about 35 to 40 pages. It should make use of bullets and steps for explaining various aspects of the plan. The language should be simple and easy to understand. It shouldn't give a gloomy outlook; rather it should evince enthusiasm and compel the investors to invest their money in this new venture.

An entrepreneur should have a fair idea through estimates as to how much money would be needed to start his business.  He should be very clear as to which sources he intends to tap to arrange finances. The best choice would be if an entrepreneur invests his own money in the business. It would give a lot of confidence to the lending agencies implying that he himself was ready to take risk for his money, if any. The best part would be that in this case nobody would be sharing his equity. The next preference goes to his family members and friends who could chip in according to their capacity. But, their money should be taken as a sacred loan. By investing in his company, they have reposed a lot of trust in him. But, there's one danger in this sort of investment and that is: If the entrepreneur incurs a loss, then a long-lasting relationship could be at stake.

An entrepreneur has to protect his creations against copying. He must know what his rights were as far as intellectual property was concerned. He can opt for patents, copyright, trade secrets or trademarks.

A new entrepreneur should not worry about the size of his business. He should find out the strengths of his new business. It has been observed that at times a lean company has defeated well-established companies. Why? Because, it has efficient management, its executives take quick decisions, its staff employs innovative techniques and responds to market needs, its monitoring mechanism is efficient; its management is alert to change; the quality of its product or service is superb; its staff is alert to all queries; it provides efficient after-sale service, and, above all, its clients are highly satisfied.

In the modern world, technology is the name of the game. It's changing at a very fast pace. In recent years, the entire concept of doing business has undergone a dramatic change. If an entrepreneur wants to succeed, he must keep himself abreast with the latest developments in technology as applicable to the business field. He should know that the time of typewriters is a story of the past and that he should now develop his liking for computer and internet.

During my recent visit to the United States, I was staying with one of my friends running a super market in Long Island along with a franchise of "Subway." One day I saw him sitting with a laptop at his residence and passing some instructions to somebody in his office in his super market that was some 20 kilometers from his residence. Suddenly, he asked that person as to why his office had been opened without his (my friend's) permission. The person from the other end explained his position and satisfied his boss. He was connected to his super market through a video camera and the internet.

Being an entrepreneur, if you hire some workforce, you have to provide them resources as well. You shouldn't bother about petty things and waste your time on non-issues. I know a gentleman who owned a large indenting business and making millions in defence deals but was extremely miser in providing necessary resources to his staff. I noticed that there was only one typewriter that was being used for typing the entire stuff of the company. You could always see three to four managers lined up in a queue waiting for their turn to get their letters typed on that single typewriter.

An entrepreneur can use his website to introduce his business to a large audience in the shortest possible time. This way, even a small home-based business can easily get international exposure and that too at a negligible cost. Your website should be professionally prepared and be able to convince why people should place their orders at your store despite the fact that millions already exist for the purpose.

If possible, an entrepreneur should get his company certified according to the requirements of the international standard for Quality Management System i.e. ISO 9001. This job should be accomplished right in the beginning so that the company starts on the right foot. But, one word of caution! He must make it a point that he himself gets involved fully during the preparation process. Only then that he would be able to exercise effective control on the quality management system of his company.

An entrepreneur should know how to prioritize his jobs. I know a gentleman who lacked in this quality. He was based in Gulf and dealing in transporting manpower to African countries by chartering airliners from various companies. Once, he won a contract to airlift manpower from his country to a country in Africa. He hired an aircraft and called the passengers on the fixed date without first ensuring landing permission from the host country. He woke up when only two days were left in the departure date whereas 45 days were available to him since the contract was won. The aircraft and the passengers reached the airport at the appointed date and time. Due to various reasons, he couldn't obtain permission for the next one week. The passengers had to be accommodated in the hotels and the aircraft had to be returned. The gentleman had to incur a colossal loss, running into millions. As a matter of fact, he should have known as to which actions were most important and needed immediate attention besides constant monitoring. If his company had been an ISO 9001 certified company, this problem would never have arisen as everybody in the company would be having his duties in writing and the gentleman entrusted with the duty of obtaining landing permission would have been on the job the moment he had come to know about the company having won the contract!

Anentrepreneur has to be extremely judicious in using his resources during the start-up phase of his business; like for example, during the initial phase, he could run his business from his home rather than hiring an office away from his residence. He could take office equipment like fax machine, photostat machine, computers, printers, scanners, etc, on lease rather than purchasing it.

An entrepreneur has to be flexible while conducting business. Suppose he's running a fast food business and preparing burgers for his customers and it's running fine; but the people are approaching him with a lot of enquiries for Donuts as well. So, it would be prudent on the part of the entrepreneur to respect the demands of his customers by starting a franchise of the Donuts as well.

It's generally perceived that one needs a lot of money to start a new business which isn't true. The main thing is how you manage it. You can start a business with even as little an amount as $ 3000! The main thing is ensuring an adequate cash flow i.e. the difference between the money you have received and the money you have spent. A successful entrepreneur always keeps the cash flow on the plus side.

Starting business from scratch is an interesting endeavour. One has to pay heed to the proven principles of entrepreneurship. These principles were true yesterday; they are true today.  An entrepreneur doesn't have to re-invent the wheel. He should just follow these principles in letter and spirit. Whosoever follows them is bound to excel and would ultimately touch the dizzying heights of success.

How To Draw Caricatures And Get Paid Over And Over

How To Draw Caricatures And Get Paid Over And Over

For some artists though, the very thought of sitting in front of a public crowd, sweating under the pressure of the spot light, makes them go weak at the knees. And for a few smart ones, fortunately there is an easier way. One that leads to ongoing income for their drawings.

Imagine being paid over and over for the one drawing, or many drawings for that matter. Imagine knowing how much money you were going to make this week, this month or even this year, how secure would that make you feel?

The technique I am about to explain can deliver just that, a full time ongoing income. Your caricatures will be sold over and over and over to a hungry market that has plenty of spare cash to spend on your creative talents.

So What Is This Secret Market?

Answer: Cell Phone Wallpapers

If you are under 20 years old then you will know exactly what I am talking about. The cell phone after-market industry is absolutely huge, with a forecast $7 billion spend in 2009 in the ringtones category alone. Wallpapers, (the cell phone equivalent of a desktop picture for the 30+'s reading this) are not nearly as big but they are second place getter in this race and that means they are worth going after.

So Exactly How Does A Caricaturist Capture This Market?

Answer: Clue, start thinking like a teenager and then create what they want.

If you follow along with their media you will get a good idea of the current "celebrities" that they are going to want on their phones, as a wallpaper picture. Try visiting MySpace, Youtube, celebrity websites, ezines, fan sites, musicians sites, cell phone ring tone selling sites like Jamster. Here you will get the latest, most viewed celebrities that you can do caricatures of and then give them away for free.

Did you say free? Are you crazy, how am I going to make any money doing that?

I know it seems ridiculous to do all that work only to give it away but unless you do, you will find it hard to get any traffic to your website, and no traffic means no money - at all.

So how do you make money doing it this way? Well first things first you need a hook (a freebie or 5) to get them to your site, then you need a way to get them interested in paying further down the track once they get addicted your freebies.

It works well like this...

Invite website visitors to download 5 wallpapers for free, all you ask is that they give you permission to send them your weekly newsletter to your latest and funniest celebrity caricatures, (with links to the ones that you sell for .99c each!)

Setup your payment gateway with the most popular ways teenagers use to purchase stuff on the Internet, to make sure that you don't cause too much "friction" in the sales process. You don't want to lose sales due to this so invest some time in researching what the most widely used methods are and emulate.

How Much Money Can Be Made Selling Wallpapers To Teenagers?

The answer to that lies in how large your list of subscribers is. With a good strike rate of conversion at around 4% on each weekly mailing, you can workout just how big you need to build your list to make sure you can do this fulltime.

Eg. List size 25,000 subscribers x $1 x 4% = $1,000

Now that is an income you could live on, and the good thing is this market, teenagers are very viral, so they will show off their latest acquisition from your caricature range to their friends to make them jealous and then they are going to want one too!

What's good for the auto industry is good for the staffing industry

The impact of the Decline of the American Auto Industry on Staffing Industry

The impact of the Decline of the American Auto Industry on Staffing Industry

In a nutshell, the above statement characterizes what is wrong with the American automobile industry, and why we are losing market share to the Japanese.

It's amazing to think that Japan, a country that was bombed almost to oblivion in the Second World War, would come back in just a few decades to be a fierce economic rival. What's even more amazing is that it is to a great extent attributable to one man –an American statistician named William Deming.

After WWII, when Japan was trying to rebuild their shattered economy, they enlisted the help of Dr. William Deming, who had just come up with the 14 principles of quality. Deming theorized that committing to producing high quality products, instead of focusing on producing in large quantities, would actually reduce production costs. Lower production cost maximizes profitability, while high quality products help increase market share.

Sounds like a great plan, right? Well, the Japanese agreed with Deming and immediately started implementing Deming's ideas. On the other hand, when Deming tried to sell his ideas to American manufacturers, he was dismissed as a quack. Clearly a prophet is not appreciated in his own home! Americans are obsessed with short-term goals. How soon can we recoup our investment? How soon can we make a profit? We want quick results, instant gratification.

Over the years, the Japanese built a reputation for building high quality, affordable cars. Sales were low at the beginning, but they persevered and won the public relations war on quality. American automakers made tremendous sales in the ‘50's, ‘60's and ‘70's by compromising on quality, and churning out millions of cars, but they were gradually losing the quality perception war to the Japanese.

Which brings us to the present-day disaster that we are facing in the American auto industry. Not a day passes without hearing on the news or reading in the papers about yet another mass layoff at an auto manufacturing plant. The Big 3 are shutting down plants across America, crippling local economies and stretching local and state budgets to the limit from decreased tax revenues and increased unemployment benefits payouts.

While we hear about the smaller companies that are dependent on the Big 3 –parts suppliers, and service providers – we hardly hear about the impact on the Staffing Industry. The impact on the staffing industry may not be broadcast on nightly news, but it's, nevertheless, there.

In recent years, the Staffing Industry has generally outpaced the general economy in growth, with 2007 being a record year, when over 3 million placements. However, with the recession, decline in U.S. manufacturing and the poor fortunes of the Big 3, the Staffing Industry is leveling off.

With the Big 3 being forced to tighten their belts and restructure to survive, so will the Staffing Industry be forced to adapt. Jobs in manufacturing are disappearing, so we need to re-evaluate business strategy and re-focus our niche markets. We also need to look on the positive side. For instance, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the Staffing industry will become the second-largest job-growth American industry.

There are still opportunities for growth for the Staffing industry. The laid off workers still need to find alternative employment, and the economy is starting to show signs that the recession has bottomed out. Economic recovery should begin towards the end of this year, and with it increased job postings by employers. The American Staffing Association reminds us why the Staffing Industry is resilient:

One cannot over-estimate the importance of the Staffing Industry to the American economy. Job recruiters are the bridge between job seekers and employers. They seek out talented job candidates for employers, while linking job candidates to job opportunities. In a way, the Staffing industry is the oil that keeps the gears of the economy moving efficiently.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel. It only took 50-plus years, but Dr. William Deming's voice is finally being heard in America. If we can make it through this dark period in America's auto industry – and we will –there is a brighter future for America. What's good for the auto industry is good for the Staffing industry.

Napoleon and Alexander the Great Are Innovative Role Models Even Today

Napoleon and Alexander the Great Are Innovative Role Models Even Today

In 1769 the Empress of Austria, Maria Therese invited a member of her entourage named Baron Wolfgang Von Kempelen to attend a conjuring show. Conjuring was a form of the emerging art of magic presentations. After the show was completed, Baron Von Kempelen announced loudly that the show was boring and he could do better.

The Empress took the Baron up on his declaration. She issued a challenge, which the Baron accepted, to return in six months with a completely new show. The Baron began to assemble the program that would, for 85 years, beguile and amaze audiences in Europe, America and South America.

The unveiling of “the Turk”, a mechanical chess playing robot, created an immediate sensation. A wooden man dressed in turban and Oriental garb was seated behind a square box with an ornate chessboard affixed to the top. Von Kempelen rotated the box, opening the doors on each side, revealing a complex series of gears, bearings and clock-like movements very intricately crafted. Turning a giant key, he would activate the mechanism and the Turk was ready to play. The Baron chose an ardent chess-playing member of the court as the Turk’s first opponent. The Turk played very fast, very decisively and easily vanquished his initial rival, much to the amazement of the court.

After the Empress died, her successor Emperor Joseph arranged for Baron Von Kempelen to tour Europe with the amazing Turk. The chess-playing robot was a sensation everywhere. He played all comers and almost never lost. He played Benjamin Franklin, considered a Grand Master player, in Paris and easily beat the great American.

The Turk’s most famous match was played in 1799 against Napoleon Bonaparte. Napoleon was at the height of his power and was considered the most brilliant military, governmental and political strategist of his age. He prepared for his match with the Turk as if preparing for the invasion of Egypt. He studied the robot’s strategies, pace of play and the aggressive tactics the machine had utilized in besting the best chess players in all of Europe where chess was played as a non-lethal substitute for warfare.

Napoleon settled on a disruptive strategy. He decided to attack the Turk’s lack of emotion, human instinct and reasoning. After all wasn’t he playing a machine? As the greatly anticipated match began, Napoleon began to negotiate alternative rules of play, slow the agreed pace of play (very fast, no withdrawal of moves, etc.) and make moves outside the parameters of the rules of chess. The Turk became furious (showing emotion), frustration (weakness) and swept away the chess pieces from the board (physical anger) all betraying emotions a machine could not possibly possess. This was an 18th century form of rope a dope.

The match with Napoleon exposed the Turk as a tiny human, an expert chess player, manipulating the movement arm of the wooden dummy to make chess moves through a series of hinges. The matches had to be played quickly owing to the severe confines of the box in which the tiny player was concealed.

Napoleon’s reputation for shrewd tactics, incisiveness and creativity was greatly embellished by quickly spreading the news of the results of the chess match with the Turk. His reputation for making unpredictable moves was reinforced and made his opponents even more wary of his potential for ruthless behavior. This was a man that was to be feared and his tactics would become more creative, cunning and novel. The capacity to innovate and create the aura of a leader to be feared and dreaded became Napoleon’s greatest asset as a warrior and Emperor of France.

Another great warrior from even more distant times was Alexander the Great. A warrior at the age of 14, general at 18, and king of tiny Macedonia at 20, Alexander conquered most of the known world before his untimely death at the age of 32. He is considered the greatest military tactician of all time.

Alexander lived during the fourth century before Christ, at a time when mysticism, myth and superstitions were an intricate part of daily life. The puzzle of the Gordian Knot was considered one of the world’s great mysteries. Outside of the Temple of Zeus, at the city of Gordus, there was an oxcart with an unusually complicated knot attached to the hitch. The world famous Gordian Knot was comprised of densely packed comer bark and there was no visible beginning or end to the maze of the knot. The priests and oracles of that day claimed that Zeus had promised that whoever could undo the knot would rule the world.

Princes, tyrants and dreamers came from all over the world to test their ability against the amazingly complex Gordian Knot. None had ever succeeded in loosening the tangled orb. Much as Napoleon approached the chess match with the Turk, Alexander planned strategy for his encounter with the Knot was as if entering his famous military campaign against King Darius and the Persians.

He spent several hours pondering the Gordian Knot. Alexander knew that success in loosening the Gordian Knot would trumpet his reputation as the world’s greatest king and military strategist. It would further motivate his army and sow fear in his enemies. Then, with a violent suddenness, Alexander grabbed a great axe and swung mightily. Hitting the immense Gordian knot directly in the center, it fell open like a pear. The gnarled bulk of the knot was severed and fell to the ground freeing the oxcart for the first time in centuries.

Alexander, like Napoleon many centuries later, saw a problem that had vexed men for many years. He took a creative, innovative and, in reality, the simplest approach to the task. The puzzle of the Gordian Knot did not come accompanied with a fixed set of rules that needed to be followed in order to claim success: just remove the knot from the oxcart. The simplicity of the task was shrouded in mystery, legend and the proximity of immense power and riches. Surely no such reward could be achieved so simply! Where was the beginning and end of the knot? Alexander understood that the conventional approaches to the problem, followed for centuries by all others attempting to untie the knot, was not relevant or of any import.

Alexander the Great said that his greatest victory was his success at solving the puzzle of the Gordian Knot. This achievement confirmed for the whole world that this man was a gifted, clever and an outside of the box thinker (a term certainly not utilized at the time of Alexander the Great). Successful entrepreneurs need to develop this same skill set as creative problem solvers, addressing insatiable market and consumer need for novel solutions and utility features to answer today’s problems and opportunities.

Today the mother of all force multipliers for the home based business

Force Multipliers

Force Multipliers

For anyone considering launching a business, particularly during these difficult economic times, the use of force multipliers is essential for success.  Investment capital is at a premium and office or retail space is expensive.  Particularly for someone who has lost their job or who has seen their entire investment portfolio evaporate, while starting a business might be the desired course of action, many people might find it difficult to actually get one started.

And here's where the use of force multipliers comes into play.  Today, the mother of all force multipliers for the home based business—in fact for any business—is the internet.  The internet levels the playing field by allowing even the tiniest, newest home based business to compete shoulder to shoulder with the big players, literally on a global scale.  Arguably one of the most impressive creations in the history of mankind, the internet is a marketer's dream come true, because it enables virtually anyone to promote a marketing message to well over a billion people, for all intents and purposes instantly for a few pennies.  Twenty years ago, internet marketing wasn't even on the radar of even the most sophisticated marketing professionals.  Today, it's a reality, used by millions of people to make tens of millions of dollars.

Contemporary internet marketers leverage an entire toolbox of force multipliers—collectively known as Web 2.0—to effectively and efficiently market and sell a wide array of products, services and opportunities online.  Turnkey, automated systems exist that enable the newest newbie, with no marketing or internet experience whatsoever, to launch an online business and start making money right away.

The key is to not be intimidated by the big players, even despite a lack of experience or capital.  By using the internet as a force multiplier, virtually anyone can succeed and thrive online.

Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla - The Difference’s Between Fame and Forgotten

Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla - The Difference’s Between Fame and Forgotten

Thomas Edison is one of the most famous and revered Americans of all time, and deservedly so. School children are taught that he harnessed electricity, invented the light bulb and the phonograph. He was awarded 1093 patents during his long and rewarding creative life. His summer laboratory in Fort Myer, Florida is still a major tourist destination. In addition, Edison earned millions of dollars by commercializing his patents and product innovations. To this day we have all benefited from his genius.

Nikola Tesla, on the other hand, is virtually unknown today. He was born in Serbia, moved to America and became one of the most renowned scientists of his day. He was in many ways, the prototype for the “mad scientist” so often depicted in books and movies. His eccentricity and poor business decisions were the stuff of legends. And yet, Tesla’s inventions and scientific advances are as important in our contemporary lives as Edison’s.

As a young immigrant scientist Tesla actually worked for Edison. Edison held the patent on Direct Current (DC) and was, as always, aggressively pursuing commercialization of his patents. The famous banker J. P. Morgan was an early financial backer of Edison’s DC. Edison constructed a generator in New York City that could provide the miracle of light in homes, including Morgan’s Murray Hill mansion. It was considered a wonder of the day.

Tesla, however, recognized that DC had serious limitations, specifically in delivery of electricity across a vast grid. He championed Alternating Current (AC). Edison was furious. AC was a direct attack on his patents. He had no commercial claim to AC power generation. Tesla left Edison and the two great scientists became lifelong enemies.

Tesla introduced his theories on AC to George Westinghouse, another foe of Edison. The two became partners and a race between the devotees of AC and DC current commenced. Westinghouse and Tesla believed AC to be superior to DC because of the arc and greater footprint of power the system could deliver.

Edison, an unusual combination of man of science and excellent business- man, conducted an aggressive; some say savage public relations campaign to support his convictions that DC was the better technology. He conducted public electrocutions of animals in an effort to prove that DC was a safer, cleaner source of power. He even allowed DC to be used in the first electrocution of a death sentence criminal. This public display was botched and the criminal was re-electrocuted in a horrible manner. The public was shocked.

Meanwhile, Tesla was tasked by Westinghouse to harness the power of Niagara Falls to generate safe, widely disseminated electricity by utilizing the AC technology. The test and subsequent grid performance confirmed that AC was the superior technology. Morgan and Edison were forced to purchase interests in AC.

Thomas Edison prospered for the rest of his days. His connections with J.P. Morgan lead to the establishment of General Electric, one of the world’s great enterprises to this day. He died rich, revered, and famous.

Tesla was an immense contributor to the evolution of our modern power system. The many scientific tasks involved in electrifying the United States and the world would have occurred much more slowly without his inventions and creativity. Tesla was crucial to the perfection and acceptance of AC, the standard used to this day. And yet Tesla died broke, alone, flustered.

Edison invented the light bulb. However, without electricity delivered widely, safely and affordably the light bulb was of little value. A car without the internal combustion engine is a wagon. Similarly, Tesla’s perfection of AC was the tool that made the light bulb so valuable. Tesla’s success inadvertently affirmed Edison’s legacy.

Edison could sell. He was a genius at self-promotion. He could seek and obtain capital based on his reputation. He had charm and charisma. Edison created a legend for himself.

Tesla had none of these qualities. He made poor business choices. His reputation for being difficult closed many promising commercial doors. Tesla was dark and dour. English was his second language and he was never comfortable in a public format. His science has become obfuscated by his many futuristic predictions. Much of modern pseudo-science and today’s UFO acolytes rely on morsels of Tesla’s preaching.

The ability to commercialize inventions is the key difference between creative types and successful entrepreneurs. We all know people with vibrant imaginations and inventiveness. We all also know how few of these people succeed at successfully converting imagination into reality.

A successful entrepreneur needs a variety of skills and talents in order to cut through the din of our very competitive marketplace. Successful designers and engineers typically make great employees, unless they can communicate, sell, market and strategize. The inventor lacking in these skills has many other potential routes to success. Licensing, partnering and alliances are viable options.

Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Bill Gates and Ray Kroc are stellar examples of what it takes to succeed. They are multi-talented, adaptable and visionary. Nikola Tesla was a genius, but in only one area. His science is invaluable. Today, the personal, business and historic legacy of Tesla is mostly forgotten. Every student learns about Thomas Edison. It took an afternoon at the movies to remind me fleetingly of Nikola Tesla’s important contributions.

The Italian industrial machine

The Italian industrial machine

The “diversity” is already clear in the structure of the production complex, much more fragmented than in other countries. The vast majority of the more than 400 enterprises operating in Italy is indeed of small and medium size: the typical company that produces industrial machinery tool, whose management is taken care directly by the entrepreneur, does not occupy more than 70 employees, compared with the 200 employees that represent the average of Japanese and German industries, in addition much more vertically integrated.

The limited size of these companies is best exploited by the Italian manufacturers, able to assert themselves in every corner of the world thanks to their qualities of flexibility and agility that no other manufacturer has ever been able to fully express. Not by chance, among the most remarkable aptitudes developed by the Italian manufacturers of industrial equipments, there is the providing of personalized equipments and machinery, that are made according the specific needs expressed by users. As regards the quality of this sector of Made in Italy, it is significant that almost 70% of machine tools produced in Italy is electronically governed, of which 20% is part of integrated systems (cells and systems made up of more than three machines).

Italian industry that produces machine tools, robot and automation is made up of companies whose management is usually taken care of directly by the entrepreneur, are identified by a strong propensity to export and high quality. Apart from quality, flexibility, reliability and customization, the Italian offer is also characterized by a trade policy that, applying the principle that technology should be shared, leads companies to offer itself on all markets with an approach of full availability to dialogue and cooperation.
Just before the economic crisis, Italy was in the fourth place among world producers of industrial tools, after Japan, Germany and China. A placement of all respect for a nation certainly not full of raw materials. In the first four months of the year a sharp decline in exports has been registered, such as a consistent fall in imports (in line with expectations). Total exports fell by 19,3% over the same period of 2008, reaching 756 million euro. Now, after a bad year, orders are starting to rise again, giving a little breath to entrepreneurs. Total imports fell by 50,3% on 2008, for a value of 240 million.

This brings the Italian companies to seek to be cutting edge in production techniques and marketing strategies. Not by chance now also the e-commerce sector is strongly developing, which promises to be another good channel for sale.
